Lenny woke very early while the girls were still asleep. He got out of bed, pattered over to the windows and pulled the blackout curtain aside.
His mouth fell open.
The Lion and The Unicorn
It was so dark when at last Lenny arrived that he could not see the place.
The evacuees were to sleep in a big attic room with dark beams overhead.
Lenny felt numb. The only thing that seemed real was the brass badge Dad had given him. He went to sleep clutching it.
‘That’s it!’ said Mum. ‘We’ve got to get you out of here, Lenny.’
Lenny only realised what was happening when he was in a crowded railway carriage. He put his head out of the window and shouted : ‘Don’t leave me, Mum! You come with me!’
The Lion and the Unicorn
This week we will be looking at The Lion and the Unicorn
Lenny Levi and his mum huddled together under the stairs. Lenny clutched the badge that his dad had given him before he went away. It was made of solid brass; a lion & a unicorn up on their hind legs, fighting each other.
Louise shoved the consolation prize down on the floor beside her chair. He sat there with his nose still proudly in the air. Of course, Alfie knew that toys can not understand anything. But secretly he hoped the sheep or goat’s feelings were not hurt. 1/2
The first people they saw in the Big School hall were Maureen MacNally and her mum. They had made an enormous cake and were inviting people to guess how much it weighed.
Then they went to look at all the flowers and fruit and vegetables, second-hand toys and home made cakes...
At home there’s a big sofa where we can bounce when Mum isn’t looking.
Grandpa and I know a good bouncing game. I ride on his knees and we sing, ‘This is the way the ladies ride...’
In the end I stop bouncing and go off to sleep.

I like bouncing. In the mornings I bounce on my bed, and the baby bounces in his cot.
Mum and Dad’s big bed is an even better place to bounce.
But Dad doesn’t much like being bounced on in the early morning.

Best of all was when Maureen, helped by Alfie, brought in the basket. Bob untied the string and out jumped the kitten! Right away he started a game with Bob’s shoelaces.

Annie Rose was already asleep and Alfie was in his dressing gown having a story when Maureen rang the doorbell. She was carrying a basket tied up with string.
She lifted the lid just a tiny bit. Alfie looked inside.
