‘It’s Dad’s birthday next week,’ said Maureen. ‘He’ll be 52. He says he doesn’t want any presents at all. Not even any cards. Mum says she doesn’t know what to do to cheer him up.’
Then Alfie said, ‘Let’s make a party for him!’ They decided to keep it a secret until the day came.

In the evenings Smoky would jump on to Bob MacNally’s lap and they would watch television together. Smoky never wanted to play.

One morning Maureen came over to Alfie’s house before breakfast. She told them that Smoky had died in the night.

The MacNallys were all very fond of Smoky. But Bob and he were special friends. When Bob came home from work he always stopped for a chat with Smoky.

‘Time to go back to Base Camp,’ said Grandma. ‘Let’s take our treasure with us before we freeze to death.’ Grandma helped them take it all down to the kitchen. It was excellent treasure.

‘What shall we do now, I wonder?’ said Grandma when they were all dry again. ‘It’s not lunchtime yet. I think we had better go on an indoor expedition.’ Alfie wanted to know what an expedition was, Grandma told him it was a long journey into unexplored territory.

Alfie’s special friend is his elephant, Flumbo. He was knitted by an old lady, and he is nearly as old as Alfie. One terrible day some moths were found living in Flumbo’s inside stuffing.
