When I told Mum’s friend, Morag, about the singing, she didn’t seem in the least surprised. She’d heard it herself, she said, but that was a long time ago. I was staying with Morag, having a whole term off school. They said the sea air would do me good.

Did I tell you about the time I heard singing coming from the sea? It came very high and clear, from way out beyond the rocks under the cliff. I knew it wasn’t the winds or seabirds calling. It was a woman’s voice, I was sure of that.

They climbed up steep mountain paths besides rushing waterfalls, hanging on to the rocky slides in case they fell in. And when they reached the top they pitched a tent and ate their supplies.

One morning, very early
One little girl called Lucy fast asleep in bed;
One tousled head cuddled down on the pillow,

The only other toy who suspected that Jonadab was somehow different from all the others was Rita, a small brown mouse with a multi-coloured tail.

Jonadab longed to take off after the pigeons, but he knew it would never do to show off like that.
