But when Annie Rose cries, or wakes up from her nap in a cross mood, I’m the only person who can cheer her up. Because she’s my little sister and I’m her brother and we’ll go on being that forever even until we’re grown-up.
Our best game, which we play together, is shops.

Annie Rose is My Little Sister
Early one morning Dad and Alfie were in the kitchen, having a chat before Mum and Annie Rose were awake. This was their special time together, just the two of them.

Then Sally ran to ask her mother if she could have some tea to take into her secret house. Mother gave her some plums and tiny biscuits with pink and white icing, and some real milk and lump sugar for the teaset.

The first thing they did was to change into their bathing suits and run into the waves.
Then they raced each other up the beach and ate their picnic. Bonting had a little piece of Alfie’s sandwich.

Night after night, Mum and Ruby clung together in the big double bed, blocking their ears and praying for the All-Clear to sound at dawn.

Then Bella did something very kind.
‘Would you swop this Teddy for my brother’s dog, then?’ she asked.
Right away the little girl stopped crying and began to smile...
Then Dave smiled too.
He hugged Dogger and he hugged Bella round the waist.
‘Thank you, Bella,’ he said.
