Under a bush in the garden is a very good place to hide... or down at the end of the bed.
Sometimes Dad hides behind a newspaper. And Mum hides behind a book on the sofa.
Taken from Hiding in Let’s Join In
Thistledown like white fluff,
Dandelion clocks to puff;
White snowflakes whirling down,
Covering gardens, roofs and town.

Then they set out. It was strange not to be going upstairs to bed but down the garden, through the gate and into the field.
From The Big Alfie Out of Doors Storybook
The End of the Bed
Curl up tight and bury your head,
What’s down there at the end of the bed?
Screw your eyes or you might see
The Thing at the bottom where your feet ought to be.

Footprints
We went out, and in the night
All the world had turned to white.
Snowy garden, snowy hedge,
Ice along the window ledge.
And all around the garden seat
A tiny bird with tiny feet
Had left his footprints in the snow,
As he went hopping to and fro.

I like Bernard.
Rough Bernard,
Tough Bernard,
Stop-it-that’s-quite-enough-Bernard,
Playing pirates, running races,
Wrinkled socks and trailing laces,
Funny jokes and wild faces,
Falling-about-Bernard,
Scuffle-and-shout Bernard,
I like Bernard.

Mum and Alfie went for a walk. It was so cold that both their noses turned pink. The puddles in the lane were iced over. But it was thin ice and you could see the water underneath. Between the water and the ice were white frosty stars.

It was too cold to play out of doors, so they stayed in the kitchen.
Grandma was making a pie for lunch. She gave Alfie a lump of pastry and showed him how to roll it out on a board. You had to use a sprinkling of floor underneath so it didn’t stick.
Alfie Weather
That night Alfie lay awake until very late. He could hear Grandma in her room. She had put a night-light by the door which made a pattern of stars on the ceiling. Alfie lay and looked at them until at last he dropped off to sleep.

Now the house was full of secrets and packages that you were not allowed to look inside.
