Dear Dan, there's nothing "bad" about it. The emblem of Downing College Cambridge is a griffin, so I've kept up a semi-obsession with them ever since!

Quentin Blake (a Downing man) creates the best griffins of all in my book! If I could muster £250, I could buy this one.

The Zodiac crabs in Medieval calendars would have been available. Some tended to look a bit like lobsters, but many did look (quite) like crabs.

If crabs were transported from the coast to Oxford, would they have "gone off" by the time they arrived? Whether by boat or road.

Wide-eyed and swishy of tail. These squirrels were another ceramic highlight of the William De Morgan collection at Compton (right).

I recalled seeing them before - & I had - via the pencil & sepia wash design for this Arts & Crafts squirrel dish, in the V & A collection, left.

Never has supreme happiness been better deserved. This is a moment to bring out a Dame Eileen Mayo kitty, going about its early morning ablutions with great satisfaction!

"On the 'nip" 🦁 courtsy of the Morgan Library.

Even the biggest cats can turn very skittish after a good roll in the catnip. 👀

Disgruntled lions speak volumes thro' their eloquent expressions

Left, glowering dubiously. This lion has adopted the "loaf" position, letting his eyes do the talking. 👀

Right, cease your scribbling! This lion wants to go out, then come in, then go out again etc.

A lot of my friends are wyvern enthusiasts. But do they realise how tricky they are to keep as pets?

They like to creep up on their owners and roar "Boo", making you jump! 1/2
