Some relevant size comparisons between some modern and modern-ish Tyrannosaurus and modern predators, courtesy of Greg Paul, @MarkWitton, and a composite using one of Franoys’ T.rex skeletal reconstructions. Modern predators are not comparable in a combat sense.
I don’t know about you, but I’d have a very hard time taking these imposing and powerful classical Tyrannosaurus images seriously if I’m also supposed to think a bear or big cat could take it on and win. Cognitive dissonance was certainly at play in the minds of those authors.
Tyrunt and Tyrantrum: 9/10.
They could not have done a better job turning T.rex into a Pokémon. Intimidating, badass, but still with that inherent Pokémon cuteness. Some of the best designed Pokémon and easily some of the toughest looking in the entire franchise.
Since discussions on whether or not T.rex is treated fairly in media are propping up again, let me draw attention to one of the most badass Tyrannosaurus in fiction: The Black Tyrannosaurus from Dino Stalker, which is a spin off of the Dino Crisis series.

@Cyclopes_sp The classic Dorling Kindersley Giganotosaurus model was the "true" face of the species for me. It was the one that felt the most real and was in the most authoritative books.
This other one by James Gurney was also formative for me.
