2013 - The Tale of Princess Kaguya
A rewarding, visually distinctive swan song from the late, great Isao Takahata that I enjoy more upon each viewing.
Still endlessly frustrating that Harmony Gold and Titan continue to do nothing with Robotech Remix.
The best narrative Robotech material since the original series, Remix was a wonderfully drawn, intentive story made with clear love for Robotech and Macross. It deserved better.
Similarly, the simple coloring on the Guncannon and Gundam as they're struck by the Gouf's heat rod is extremely stylish. Great use of hatching, expressive coloring, and some practical lighting of cels.
Some really stylish lighting in Amuro's battle with Ramba Ral in episode 19 of Mobile Suit Gundam.
Probably my favorite of her non-Lancer Mospeada/New Gen pieces. Centering Ariel and managing to convey the duality between the grand, cosmic scale of the Invid as well as her more intimate, personal romance with Scott.
And LOTS of Lancer. Doran's really great at capturing willowy bishonen figures, as she does with Zor, but she captures Lancer perfectly. The first piece here was even used for a poster advertising Robotech Art 2, and it's an excellent pick.
Definitely appreciate all her Southern Cross/Masters artwork, really excellent stuff. The detailing and vibrancy of the Bowie and Musica piece always blows me away, and always happy to see more of Zor.
Quick thread celebrating @ColleenDoran's fantastic illustrations for Robotech Art 2. Gorgeous, varied work that wonderfully captures the essence of the original designs while adding a distinct, personal touch.
16) Iron Gear
Xabungle has some really distinct designs, but the Iron Gear especially is great, finding a balance between elements of the Xabungle and Gallia with it's own distinct palette while also being a really cool landship.
