The First World War is far removed from the sunny bliss of this little wharf on the Thames, only the costumes of the ladies remind the viewer that we are no longer at Grez.

'The Advance Guard'~ Georges Bertin Scott, (1905)

This watercolour shows two soldiers on horses trotting along a country road. On both sides of the road can be seen green grass with wild red flowers dotted around. Behind the soldiers are green fields as far as the horizon.

'Sutton Courtenay'~ Sir John Lavery, (1917)

Sutton Courtenay, painted in the summer of 1917, is the Edwardian equivalent of Lavery's plein air views of the river Loing at Grez. It combines society portraits and elegant leisure activity with idyllic outdoor scene involving water.

'A Peasant Woman'~ Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas, (1871)

The Breton girl's white headdress is illuminated by the bright sunlight which pours in through a transparent white curtain. This painting also reveals Degas pre-occupation with countre-jour, modelling mass against light.

A mark of Sargent's exceptional talent was his ability to reveal his subject's character, especially the women who posed for him.

Being a self-taught artist, he was perhaps naturally drawn to a free-form expressive style in painting. His late works deal with the theme of the artist as clown or pierrot.

This luminous painting is one of Daumier’s most highly regarded works. It is a preparatory work for a more finished picture showing Don Quixote charging a flock of sheep.
