In a lot of ways I feel like WTC is about experimentation and iteration. I’ve played these games countless times, with a myriad of different art styles, soundtracks and presentations on all number of devices. I’ve seen it done and redone and done again, different every time.
The jank, DIY nature of the game didn’t turn me away at all, if anything it sucked me in. I’d played other VNs before Higurashi, like Katawa Shoujo and CLANNAD, but they both failed to keep my attention while Higurashi commanded it. I knew what VNs generally felt like. Not this.
Compare cel animated TV Tom and Jerry to digitally animated TV Tom and Jerry- which do you think looks more like the original theatrical shorts?
There’s literally a correct and incorrect answer here, by the way.
Compare the theatrical Tom and Jerry shorts to the syndicated, cel animated TV series, and you’ll immediately get the picture. A TV show has less budget, less resources, and less time. Hence why so many cel animated TV shows used limited animation and reused scenes so often.
Cowboy Bebop’s Vicious, Rose Guns Days’ Gabriel, and Fullmetal Alchemist’s Dante are all villains I’ve seen dismissed as being bad characters, but honestly I like them all as villains, and I like the way they’re used and integrated into their story.
