At a crossroads, Hercules encountered Vice and Virtue. A moral lesson is enscribed on the entablature at upper left: [HO]NOR ET VIRTUS/[P]OST MORTE FLORET (Honor and Virtue Flourish after Death).

Tintoretto’s Finding of Moses, from the Met in New York. Depictions of this scene were especially popular in Venice, as it echoes the birth of the City. Interestingly, a Perugino ‘finding’ was destroyed in the Vatican around 1530 when they told an aging sculptor to paint over it!

St Sebastian Reproving Diocletian, by Veronese in his parish church, San Sebastiano. The great artist is buried there in the midst of his glorious work, freshly restored and waiting for you to visit!

Virgin of Humility, adored by a prince of the House of Este, 1440 - Jacopo Bellini at his best. This is now in the Louvre Museum.

A Michelangelo Morlaiter fresco from Palazzo Grassi. He was one of the founding members of the Accademia di Scoltura, Pittura, ed Architettura Civile. His father, Giovanni Maria Morlaiter, was a sculptor whose works can still be found around Venice.

Veronese's gorgeous and poignant final work - the Conversion of St Pantaleon. The saint was such a famous doctor that Emperor Diocletian himself chose him for his own doctor. The work is to the right in the church of San Pantalon, most famous for its amazing ceiling!

The Crucifixion of Christ by Tintoretto in San Cassiano. John Ruskin described it as, "the finest in Europe". It’s actually based on a print by the Dutch philosopher and artist Dirck Coornhert, made from a design by Maerten van Heemskerck, who made many designs for engravers!
