Canaletto's view of the Campo San Rocco, with the eponymous church. The Scuola Grande houses Tintoretto's masterworks. The church to the side is free to enter and also houses some beautiful art.

This 'Assumption' by Palma Vecchio is in the Accademia, in Venice. It's so peaceful compared to Titian's in the Frari, painted shortly after.

"La riva degli Schiavoni sotto la neve", by Giuseppe Borsato, 1833. The Riva is under the snow once again today!

Adoration of the Magi, by Jacopo Bassano, now in Barcelona. Tintoretto once said to Bassano: ‘Ah, Jacopo, if you had my drawing and I had your color, I would defy the devil himself to enable Titian, Raphael, and the rest to make any show beside us...” How true!

This Veronese Annunciation is in the Catalan National Museum in Barcelona, on loan from the Thyssen collection. Isn’t it beautiful?

I may be stretching my theme a little here, but this is Dali's 'Othello Dreaming of Venice' from the incredible Dali museum in his hometown of Figueres in Catalonia. I strongly recommend a visit!

Saint Peter, Saint Thomas and Saint Andrew - not serene, as they were always depicted in art until this amazing painting. Here they are distraught at losing Mary to heaven. The bottom third of Titian's breathtaking Assumption - full of emotion.

Leandro Bassano's striking depiction of the transportation of the body of the Virgin Mary, in theCapelle di Sant’Atanasio, San Zaccaria. So many works in here; and the flooded crypt is a totally unique experience! A must-see!

Titian's 'Adoration of the Magi' - this version is in the Prado in Madrid. Just a few days until the Epiphany, and the Arrival of La Befana on Jan 5th! Some more Venetian 'Magi' coming this week - stay tuned!
