Some examples of my favorite characters from anime/manga:
Erin (Kemono no Sōja)
Hana (Wolf Children)
Anne (Green Gables)
Mutta (Space Brothers)
Peko (Ping Pong)
Madarame (Genshiken)
Rei, Hina (March comes in like a lion)
Yakumo (Shōwa Genroku)
I just hope that I won’t count my birthdays someday and realize I’m twice as old as I thought I was.
Or in other worlds, inserting random photographs and switching between fairy normal and extremely abstract styles just for the sake of it doesn’t really do it for me.
I definitely love artsier works, but I prefer artistic decisions that seem to have a clear purpose.
That being said, I’m probably still not the biggest fan of Shaft’s style. It certainly adds variety & kinda goes well with the arts theme, but it feels erratic too often and lacks a consistent visual identity (which, arguably, is its identity).
I enjoyed Hidamari Sketch (2007), I can definitely see why it was popular enough to get so many sequels. Comfy setting, a clear theme (the arts), unique direction, a likable cast.
Although the production values are nothing special, the art direction & music are really good. Not Mushishi-level good, but they really add a lot to the atmosphere. I’ll savor this every morning.
Stories like these (see: Natsume, Mushishi, Miyori etc.) are pure comfort food for me. I’ll never get tired of anime depictions of the Japanese countryside.
My new morning anime: Mokke (2007)
A story about two sisters living in a rural area with their grandparents, encountering many gods and yōkai.
Watching Hidamari Sketch in the morning and Bartender before sleep is a good day to start/end the day.
