Opinions my own!

Everyone enjoys a good paleozoo concept, right? Well, I thought I'd introduce a project of mine that I've had for years and years - welcome to

First off, any good zoo needs a good logo - here's how POLARIS' logo changed, the right is current canon.

Here we have the finished products! Happy to have gotten these completed - they're my focus for this semester. Delphininae dolphins are also called "beaked oceanic dolphins" and include made very well known species. (More in ALT)

Day 8: "Creeping" - Patagonian Killer Whale (Orcinus orca) just 26 Killer Whales on Earth take part in an incredible behavior: Beaching themselves to catch Southern Sea Lion pups! Apparently it started with two males in 1976 and since then they've taught their whole pod!

Day 7: "Alarming" - Risso's Dolphin (Grampus griseus) you may see Risso's Dolphins individuals with distinct round scars - these are caused by the beaks of squid attempting to defend themselves from these powerful predators. Even the massive Humboldt Squid must watch out! 🐬🍴🦑

Day 6: "Soft" - Long-beaked Common Dolphin (Delphinus (delphis) bairdii) did you know that swimming flipper-to-flipper not only is a way for a mother dolphin to keep with her calf, it also serves a neat purpose: she will often rub her calf while swimming to keep them clean!

4 16

Day 5: "Mirrored" - Pacific White-sided Dolphin and Dusky Dolphin (Sagmatias obliquidens & S. obscurus) these dolphins have been separate for millions of years, and are each other's closest relative. They are both extremely high-energy and fun dolphins to be around.

Day 3: "Captive" - Common Bottlenose (Tursiops truncatus)

Did you know a great deal of our knowledge of dolphins' physiology comes from studies done by and their partners, by giving dolphins their very own versions of a "fitbit" device!

Day 2: "Monstrous" - Humpback Whale (Megaptera novaeangliae)

It is quite possible that the sea serpents reported by sailors of antiquity were in fact sightings of pods of whales, and I've done my best to represent that here.

3 20

Day 1 "Survivor" - Gray Whale (Eschrichtius robustus)

Even in the face of whaling and now anthropogenic climate change, the Gray Whale continues to be a symbol of survival and resiliency - even coming up with novel ways of obtaining food!

Finally had time to pick this back up! Kelp Paddies often provide shelter for growing kelp forest denizens too! It's common to see them surrounded by a multitude of small fish. In the open ocean, nearly anything can be shelter!
