The return of #WhaleDayFriday means time to introduce the other beaked whale we'll meet for my Whales of California series. This is Cuvier's Beaked Whale (Ziphius cavirostris).
Their brilliant colors come from diatoms and other things that live on their skin. #wildlifeart
What's really interesting about Harbour Porpoises is that they have a very strange, seemingly unconnected global range. The subspecies that occurs in the Eastern North Pacific (ENP) is P. p. vomerina, and there is probably more to this guessing from other species.
120KYA, the fearsome Dhole or Tole (Cuon alpinus) lived over most of Eurasia. They differ in appearance according to where they are encountered. They are known for their courage (or foolishness) and tendency to mob larger predators. A pack could certainly pose a threat to people!
In addition to the diminutive Market Squid, Californian waters are home to Diablo Rojo, the Humboldt Squid - these are fast, intelligent, pack-hunting predators that are found from Chilé northwards into even Alaskan waters at times. Risso's Dolphins and Humans both prey on them!
#WhaleDayFriday is here, and I'm happy to introduce the next species in this series - the Pacific White-sided Dolphin (Sagmatias obliquidens)!
These are high-energy, playful dolphins native to the North Pacific. They're quite easily one of the most boat-friendly species around!
Mulku, Thorn Creatures, Porcupines, occur through much of the area that the story takes place in. They're a surprising source for good food and their quills can be fashioned into some beautiful jewelry!
