A variety of seabirds utilize Kelp Paddies as a place to rest - shown here are Brandt's Cormorant, Sooty Shearwater, Forster's Tern, Brown Pelican, Brown Booby, Red-necked Phalarope, and Heermann's Gull. I couldn't fit ALL species here but I hope y'all enjoy this selection!

First off - the kelp! Kelp are any one of many genera of large algae that create large forests in different parts of the world. In California you can encounter Macrocystis pyrifera, or Giant Kelp. Even when dislodged from the where they're standing, they can form habitat!

But also they act as nurseries, for some of our most well-known kelp forest denizens! I'll be coloring this piece by piece throughout the day so I can introduce you to everyone on here easiest/the best. Stay tuned! 😁💕🐋🐬

- Welcome to one of my favorite micro-biomes, the Kelp Paddy! These can occur any time kelp is dislodged, whether because of storms, hot weather, or urchin disturbance. They play a vital role in acting as rest-stops for birds and large fish-

Lastly is the well-known Swordfish, a cosmopolitan species but one that is found in California waters. Previously taken in giant numbers in giant nets, there seems to be a want to shift towards utilizing the old methods of harpooning. One fisherman-one fish at a time.

Dorado, Dolphinfish, Mahi-Mahi, whatever you call them they're a fearsome predator and one that occurs in large numbers in Southern California waters - it's quite a sight to see! They're known for exceptional tablefare and their gorgeous green and gold palette.

Overall, these fish play a role where they remind of how rich the ecosystem is - supporting whales, sharks, pinnipeds, seabirds, and thousands of tonnes of fish! The North Pacific Bluefin Tuna is one of the most well-known denizens of the region, supporting many fishermen.
