There's something about Superman that just works best in simplicity. Maybe it's his big red, yellow, and blue costume. It's very sensitive to how you draw it.

Rendering him in a modern style just doesn't work for me.

Even better would have been to create a stronger visual shape with the petals of the lily and the figure.

I should have made the leaves white and used a dark background to draw the eye to the center character. Something like:

And Superman and Star Wars comics today.

The images are more dramatic but they certainly don't scream "Adventure inside" like the old covers do.
