The pangolin is found in several countries in Africa & Asia. Out of the 8 species, 6 are listed as endangered by the IUCN (3 of those critically) and the remaining 2 are vulnerable. Despite many national & international protections, excessive hunting & trafficking continues.
Although the critically endangered Bornean orangutan is a protected species in Malaysia and Indonesia, much of its range is not. Their survival depends on long-term management of large forests and protection against illegal land use and hunting.
The saola, found in the Annamite range in Laos & Vietnam, is one of the rarest large mammals in the world. It was scientifically discovered in 1992, when remains were discovered during a survey in Vũ Quang Nature Reserve.
The Sumatran elephant was listed as critically endangered in '11, after losing over 80% of their population in three generations. Current estimates put them at 2400-2800 & locally extinct in 23 of their 43 identified ranges.
