@roughtradeX @RembrandtsRoom I remember walking into the Louvre one *very* cold December day, raining pouring down in sheets, and I just stood in front of her, all alone. She's beautiful, no doubt, but to me the Virgin of the Rocks and the Virgin and the Child with St. Anne are more powerful.
Image below of what scholars think the meteoroscope may have looked like, according to the treatise. Then, three images that show an original stained page, the imaging result, and tracing of just the Greek characters (Ptolemy's work). Impressive! https://t.co/aLksjHt2xx
Just a bit more teasing for the exhibition 'Qui es-tu Apollon? De l'Antiquité à la culture pop' ('Who Are You Apollo? From Antiquity to Pop Culture'), opening 15 April at the Juliobona Gallo-Roman Museum in Lillebonne, France (Normandy).

@trillium_lady @Elisabe52245554 @jdmccafferty True! Only modern saints seem to get their titles by dying old in a hospital. St. Lucy (plucked-out eyes, slit throat), St. Cassian (hacked to death by children), St. Bartholemew (flayed alive, but still smiling!), St. Antipas (roasted in brazen bull), et al.
It's so interesting when classical sculpture inspires modern artists. In this particular case, we have Joshua Reynolds' Portrait of Omai, which was inspired by the Apollo Belvedere. The 'adlocutio' pose shows off the young man's tattooed hands. #arthistory 1/
@DocCrom @pompeii_sites @p_historians @roamintheempire @mythsbaby When this fresco came to the Getty, I was finally able to see how beautifully the silver pail and caduceus were painted.
@ItalyAlexandra For reference, this is what it looked like before restoration. All that yellowed varnish (?), or a layer of soot and dirt, gone.
