We're marking anniversary with this WORK OF THE WEEK!

Life Boats (2012) by Jamie Murphy is a nocturnal image of a recognisable maritime subject. Taking a low viewpoint, it focuses on lifeboats being lowered from Titanic's deck as it sinks into the icy North Atlantic.

In her work, Monica Poole (1921-2003) – whose centenary is this year – explored the natural world in remarkable detail, reflecting that "Those twisted shapes will not leave me alone."

This edition of TALKING PICTURES is inspired by ‘Ship in Stormy Seas’ by Richard Peter Atkinson (1876) from our collection, a detail of which is pictured here. 🌊

Known in Spanish as zueco/zapatos de madera and probably dating to the 19th century, Gibson identified the pairs in our collection as being from Asturias and Albarracín in Spain.

Illustrator Annie Forrester has dreamed up a Wild West version that we are particularly taken by! 🤠

One of the best loved paintings in the collection, The Red Rose (1923) is one of some 400 portraits the artist made of his wife, Hazel Lavery.
