Today marks the 50th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 moon landing!

Long before that was possible, James Arthur O’Connor painted this moon-gazing nocturnal beauty.

@MARYMCCARTHY001 @Rachel_Kuhn_ @orncgreenwich @michaeljwaldron Our recent #TheFigReveal project saw sculpture conservator Eoghan Daltun removing fig leaves from our #CanovaCasts. This was done live in our Sculpture Galleries for practical reasons, but also as a means to share ongoing conservation work with our visitors in an engaging format.

All this talk of #FaceApp got us thinking... if our 200 year old Casts could age like the rest of us, what would they look like?

Well, perfect Apollo, Dionysus, and Venus seem unhappy about it. But, if anything, mere mortal Letizia Ramolino Bonaparte looks happier than ever!

Day 2 of #TheFigReveal took on the daddy of them all... Laocoön and His Sons, that is!

Today’s conservation work involved Eoghan Daltun removing fig leaves from three figures. What lay beneath is remarkably intact and matches well with the @Musei_Vaticani original. #Midsummer19

Day 1 of #TheFigReveal is done and we have learned so much about how these fig leaves were attached... and visitors have been fascinated by what has been uncovered!

Our poster boy Adonis, lover of Aphrodite, will now receive some expert TLC to make good his dignity. #Midsummer19

John Lavery died at Rossenarra House, Co. Kilkenny #onthisday in 1941. A native of Belfast, he is remembered as one of 'The Glasgow Boys' and for his iconic portraits, including The Red Rose (1923) and The Widow (1921) currently on display in our Gibson Galleries (Floor 1). #Cork

Our friends @NMIreland Collins Barracks are holding a day of talks and demonstrations this Saturday 29 September (10am-4.30pm), covering the life and work of artist/geologist George Victor Du Noyer.
