Kintaro is a folk hero from Japan. Raised by a mountain witch he had superhuman strength & befriended animals in the mountains. He's depicted here refereeing a wrestling match between a monkey & a rabbit.

Achilles was one of the greatest heroes of Greek #mythology. He fought in the Trojan war and despite his mother's attempts to protect him, he was shot in the heel and killed.

Despite her wild & frightening appearance she is not an evil spirit. Those who see her will faint with shock but she will magically revive them. It is said that when disasters occur she will ring the temple bell to warn the inhabitants of danger.

In Japanese folklore the minogame is a turtle believed to live up to 10,000 years. It's tail is made out of seaweed & algae & it features in the famous legend of Urashima Taro. It is depicted here with rabbits dancing beneath the moon.

In Japan there is a folktale about 80 suitors who met an injured rabbit on their journey. All were cruel to the rabbit but one, Okuminushi, who was gentle hearted & helped the rabbit. In the end he was the one the princess chose.

Oiwa is a Japanese ghost, the vengeful spirit of a young woman betrayed by her husband. He disfigured her face in an attempt to get rid of her so he could marry a younger woman. She cursed the pair on her death & returned to haunt all who had betrayed her.
