I finally watched the Ghibli film Pom Poko and loved it. It's all about tanuki, has a yokai parade, lots of references to Japanese folklore, and a nice message about looking after the environment.

In Japanese folklore, tales are told of yonaki-ishi or night-crying stones. These stones cry loudly at night and it is believed to be because they are possessed by a spirit, usually of someone who has been murdered and is seeking revenge.

Kintaro is a folk hero from Japan. Raised by a mountain witch he had superhuman strength & befriended animals in the mountains. He's depicted here refereeing a wrestling match between a monkey & a rabbit.

In China an image of the Kitchen God Zao Jun is kept near the stove. Just before Chinese New Year he reports back to heaven about the household. Families smear his lips with honey so he will only say sweet things.
