The Ninja Warriors (Arcade, 1987) is a unique brawler as Taito used mirror trickery and multiple screens to create a seamless triple-wide screen effect. Expand the images below to see it in action. The tech was also used in the shooters Darius and Darius II.

Today's write-up for my scrolling beat-em-up book is the glorious Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara (1996). One of the deepest (if not THE deepest) side-scroller ever made. So many systems and features, branching paths and things to enjoy.

Anyone else a fan?

The book will also feature original illustrations from my mate - which will appear in each of the year introduction spreads, where we discuss gaming, hardware and the genre at that time.

Today for my book I'm playing and writing about Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (Arcade, 1995).

I'm not familiar with the show at all, but the combat is pretty fun here. Great visuals and animation, but the soundtrack is all over the map :O

Guardians: Denjin Makai II (Arcade, 1995)

Okay folks, here it is: the best side-scrolling beat-em-up I've played for my book that I hadn't played before. If you love the genre, please don't sleep on this one.

8 characters, superb specials, a combo system and stunning visuals.

Gourmet Sentai Barayarō (Super Famicom, 1995)

Just finished this one and oh man, it's a blast. Utterly crazy game, where after each stage a robot gourmet whips you up meals to eat using ingredients you collect from KO'd enemies. Brilliant stuff.

We love this one so much we’re going to use it as part of our Killtopia: Volume Kickstarter rewards. Stay tuned for more details!

I’m writing during my morning and afternoon commute again, and yesterday I completed page 110 of BPM: Beatdowns Per Minute.

There’s just one final sequence to go then the script is done. It’s crazy looking back at just how big this project has been 😳

King of the Monsters 2: The Next Thing (Arcade, 1993)

Really good monster-battling fun that feels like a cross between a classic side-scroller and a wrestling game. SNK really improved on the original with this one.

Guardian's of the 'Hood (Arcade, 1992). This is utter dogshit from Atari Games, but you have to admire the digitised sprite technique that captured real actors in front of a bluescreen, similar to their work on Pit-Fighter.

Also, is that Michael Jackson??
