In case you’re curious, our @mangasplaining discussion is mostly focused on @gomanga’s 50th anniversary edition of Kamen Rider, which features new translation, new lettering and some additional stories that’s not in the previously released digital version. https://t.co/SHGmEpVd3o
Another fun aspect of talking about Devilman on @mangasplaining is its connection to Glenn Danzig (Misfits), through his Verotik imprint's cringe-worthy colorized versions of the Devilman time travel stories published in 1995, plus Verotik's Satanika vs. Go Nagai's Sirene
But when English comics readers don't have exposure to the manga series that influenced the anime and manga that they enjoy today, it's a missed opportunity to understand where manga has been and how this history influences where it's going. This is why classic manga matters.
Got my copy of a new release/upcoming @mangasplaining read, Kamen Rider by Shotaro Ishinomori from @gomanga today, and realized that @zdarsky will kill me for picking another 800-page “1 volume manga” 😅https://t.co/L5da8elaKU on the bright side, it’s a lot of 2-page spreads…
@Editrix_Rachel @sidewalksiren @mangasplaining @digitalmanga @Kodansha Also, maybe Kokomo Confiserie from @shojobeat ? Its set in a pastry shop / features creation of fancy sweet treats https://t.co/su3u9fg0hN
@Editrix_Rachel @sidewalksiren @mangasplaining Its pretty out of print, but Antique Bakery by Fumi Yoshinaga, perhaps? @digitalmanga published that way back when. https://t.co/bT3cDVAHR1 Her more recent work What Did You Eat Yesterday? fr @kodansha has some baking recipes too. https://t.co/RPXon855dt
@arpadokay @randimason @riteshwriter Also worth a look are these two @KodanshaManga titles focused on ballroom dancing: 10Dance (2 guys make hot moves on the dancefloor and on each other - https://t.co/INC7dtK9lW) and Welcome to the Ballroom, a more shonen manga style story - https://t.co/5QTnIKSLlg
@arpadokay @randimason @riteshwriter Two other shojo manga series with musical themes include Anonymous Noise https://t.co/hIV3uvrGmI and Nana - https://t.co/vWAqUZth46, both have romance and rock band themes, both fr. @shojobeat
