Here's another piece I haven't posted. I know I've posted a lot, but there are still plenty of pieces that you have to pick up the book to see :)
#JazzDay Today is the last day of Jazz Day posts :) This book changed my life. It was my 1st book, and I gave it all I got. I'll never forget when I finished, &screwed shut the box my dad made me to ship off the paintings. Was up all night & started yelling & jumping up and down!
#JazzDay This portrait of Duke Ellington is a homage to Gary Kelley. As soon as I received the project and realized I would be creating jazz imagery, my legitimate first though was "well, try not to emulate Gary Kelley's legendary jazz illustration too much."
#figureFRIDAY Here is a 20 minute figure drawing using the @markenglishonline @IllustrationAca technique. Drawing the figure using shape instead of line is a great way to shock my system into seeing things differently! Nupastel on toned paper.
#throwbackTHURSDAY This is an older illustration I created for NY rapper Donny Goines. It's a cover for his album "Success Served Cold." Was scoping René Gruau for sure! Ink, ink wash, graphite, and digital.
Hey! My name is Francis, and I am a book illustrator living in Detroit, MI :)
Pumped to share that my illustration for Anansi Boys was nominated for a Spectrum Award in the Book Category :)
I hope to make it to Kansas City for the ceremony in March!

#artTUESDAY Goofing off with a portrait. Acrylic, ink wash, and graphite with some brayers to add that extra sauce!
#artTUESDAY Here is a portrait of @neilyoung . This was an experiment of combining traditional (acrylic, ink, and pencil) and digital. I needed a strong face with solid forms, and Neil did the trick.
