Pediment of a Lucanian grave ca 340 BC. While the Greek influence is obvious (the palmettte was used by Attic vase painters 2 centuries earlier) the color palette, drawing style and technique of these painter was definitely original.
The mosaic was laid at the end of the 4th century. At that time, Rome was still holding to Southern Gaul but figurative scenes were becoming scarce, in favor of geometric and plant patterns. This indicates probably a decreased expertise of the mosaicists.

A bright hilarious Etruscan Gorgon from around 490 BC Tarquinia. Ancient italian people used Gorgon images to ward evil spirits away. You never know, there are arseholes around ! People who speak to you while you drink your coffee.

I learned the trick from Jean Pierre Soalhat and used it on my Lepus Vexus mosaic, building individual small pieces which I later glued on the main piece.
You can use to build mosaics techniques used in digital drawing.
To draw this Gorgon, I need many little snakes, I draw them on the computer, in Green to better see them. Edit them individually. Then I can bring them back on top of my drawing. This saves lots of time.
