@TirthaChakraba2 Yes, but it isn't a break on my map. It is only a "break" if it is sticking out of a narrow Sagittarius arm bending towards 50 degrees. I think that there is such a structure (my "Dehcho") but the Sagittarius region is not part of it.
The 5 branches labelled in the 6 kpc map seem to correspond to the hydrogen branches labelled in this HI4PI velocity map.
Solving the mystery of the third quadrant. I could not find a catalog of HI4PI shells/bubble in the 3rd quadrant so I started working on one and I noticed a simpler pattern: 5 hydrogen streams that wend their way past the bubbles, connecting the local material to the Perseus arm.
@DewlineO Personally I'd call it a spur or a branch if it was connecting two spiral arms. Which I guess it might be. However, in my doodle the Sagittarius region is part of the main inner arm as it bends towards the end of the bar. So actually just what you would expect.
In case anyone is wondering, I got the HI bubble map by warping the HI4PI velocity data assuming a galactic rotation of 240 km/s. Very rough I know. Really surprised to not see more papers on HI4PI by the way. Zoomable velocity here: https://t.co/AHX5JbB08R
As part of my 6 kpc mapping project I am researching and labelling objects in the third quadrant in a region I am calling the Dehcho delta.
The region in my doodle shown as the Dehcho delta is full of atomic hydrogen (HI) bubbles. A couple of these are referenced in the scientific literature but can't find anything about the others. @HIprocessor do you know of any sources for HI4PI bubbles?
CG4 is a nearby object located inside the Gum nebula, a vast region of ionized hydrogen gas surrounding the Vel OB2 OB association. https://t.co/P7ODYdeQeC
Hi, I'm Kevin Jardine and I'm a galactic cartographer. I make maps of our home galaxy, the Milky Way. For today's #GlobalScienceShow, I'll explain how that works. Follow along @GlobalSciShow and check out @mpoessel who is up next. (Image: Kristian Pikner, Wikimedia commons)
