Yesterday I posted some (confusing) comments on OB star density maps and today I'm going to explain in what I hope is a more coherent way what is going on. Here are two maps for comparison.

Take a look at this image of the Cygnus region. There are many star formation regions in this direction that are bright in both infrared (bright) and radio (high). But do you see the dark pillar in the background?

Galaxy on a ball. I am taking a short break from my Gaia mapping to create a projection of radio and infrared all sky data onto a sphere. The radio data is (unusually) used to create a heightmap and so it generates mountain ranges on the sphere.

If you want to see all the stars out to 10 parsecs you can see the zoomable top down map: https://t.co/4aDmxYhcY4 or fly around the 3D version: https://t.co/1cS8FRJ33b

The distance to the spectacular Carina nebula has long been a matter of controversy. Gaia has settled the matter with the relatively close distance of 2.35 kpc and the EDR3 release makes this even more precise as explained in this paper. (ESO image). https://t.co/833dAlrnOD

My previous map was based on a combination of the StarHorse + Drimmel/Poggio OBA stars. Looking forward to comparing.

Made progress on my project to connect all the bright stars within 10 pc with a planar graph (i.e. something that would display in a board game) with edges < 3 parsecs. By adding a number of red and brown dwarfs, managed to keep the edges below 3 parsecs.

The stars and the region as a whole seem to have no common names. Seven red dwarfs ... What would you call them? Hmm.

I've just put up my latest map: The Closest Stars. This (so far as I know) shows every confirmed star, brown dwarf and planet within 10 parsecs. If anything is missing or incorrect, I'd like to know! The zoomable version is here: https://t.co/4aDmxYhcY4
