So we followed this odd theory and found something very interesting. In RGB, Blaine uses the generic bald guy overworld sprite, but in Yellow, when his art was updated to reflect the new design, Blaine used a different sprite... Silph's President's previously unique sprite.
So those things that looked like pipes at the back of the Pokemon Lab... were actually pipes. Apparently somebody really liked collecting amber pipes in Gen 1, but not as much in LGPE.
In honor of Blue... Green... Leaf? being added to LGPE, hi-res artwork of her from Generation 1. First is by Sugimori himself, the second and third are from Mato of Pokemon Special/Adventures.
--NOT REAL POKEMON--
Probably by Junichi Nihei ニ瓶淳一 , published in the Corocoro March 97 issue. In the early days, Corocoro promoted the Pokémon Batoen (ポケモン バトエン, “Battle Pencils”), a rock-paper-scissors-like game with Pokémon moves written on each side of a pencil.
--NOT REAL POKEMON--
Published in Corocoro Comic June 97 issue, probably by Junichi Nihei ニ瓶淳一. This unofficial Pokémon was designed to promote a contest called “Pokémon 2 Idea Contest” where readers were encouraged to submit their ideas for the next Pokémon installment.
Colored concept art for the anime from various sources. Meowth's ears are white like that in a few different instances so it was likely planned to be that way. In Corocoro, Ash was drawn with that lightning bolt hat multiple times so it must have been a late change.
Team Rocket art drawn by Sugimori in honor of their appearance in LGPE. Their designs in the anime changed quite a bit from the concept art, Jessie even has one of the Gen 1 whips!
Today's update isn't and never will be 100% confirmed, it's just something to think about. So Wobbuffet, kind of a weird looking Pokemon, right? Basically has two heads. It also doesn't appear in the Gen 2 Proto... or does it?
And restored art of Ken Sugimori's Mr Fuji from the TCG. Note how Pikachu was in an odd state between its white stomach design and the the later Gen 1 style seen on the Yellow boxart.
