and even in this mess, there's some seriously impressive writing chops within the game
the tragic elements actually hurt and i was devastated by some of the more emotional scenes in the game
at the same time, it can suddenly become a funny game that will make me smile
but perhaps this is also why even the most standard story there is so memorable
no one's ever tried to tell a martial arts story in a dating sim route for example
in any other medium, it would be cliched
but in a dating sim, it wouldn't work and that's why it's refreshing
each aspect introduced is explored through dating sim gameplay mechanics and this is both the game's strength and weakness
it's hard to write stories with arcs split up into dating sim events and a few of the routes suffer from this serious pacing issue
and it is this chaotic dissonance that gives the game its distinctiveness
it's truer with the heroines who are distinct from each other because they come from different fiction genres
there's an osananajimi story but also you could be falling in love with an assassin
the game could have the most compelling drama exploring abuse and bullying before switching straight to ninjas and assassins trying to kill you and finally to Tiger Joe, the Master Asia expy with a badass fursuit, teaching you to be a REAL MAN
this hodgepodge of elements that never coheres at all is what you get
some of the best scenes in the game in fact play on this absurdity: a cute girl offers yomogi mochi to the rival and the rival refuses to fight the protagonist because the fragrance would be ruined by blood
and if you find this premise nonsensically awesome, this is the game for you because that's what you're going to do for the entire game
you get into random encounters and then date some girls while time to the apocalypse ticks down
the game's actually serious about its premise
you play as yuuji, a martial artist who wants to swear revenge, and you are tasked to meet and help several people
but you are also being chased by world governments and organizations for your powers because you hold the power to destroy the world
a perfect setup for a dating sim
finished Only You -Liber Cross- for the PS2
this game is a Hot Mess not because it's bad but because it's a clash of cool ideas that don't work
and i love it
it's a Doukyuusei-styled dating sim with G Gundam's protagonist and a dash of Hokuto no ken
