This was a great commission. @PoetrySociety sent me the poems and image suggestions. I read all of them, and then drew and cut out lots of little images and moved them round to make a good image. This picture was made into a series of prints that were sent to the prizewinners.
Poetry-trees on paper and on glass to celebrate the amazing winners of the #FoyleYoungPoets of the Year Award 2020 organized by the @PoetrySociety! Each of the images on the tree represents one of the 100 winning poems: https://t.co/ttM1itFunf
I also played a game of trying to find character models in renaissance art, like these crowd scenes from Belllini: https://t.co/jhIDfU1pYt, and https://t.co/fTc5bgv6xR. Also, I’m very suspicious that this young man might be Portia in disguise: https://t.co/2XN9V7ek8G
The first reference point was my sketches of Venice from 2015 (back when travelling was a thing). The picture on the wider reading card has a very very tiny self-portrait of me sketching the view from the Doge’s palace.
