“F” is for FOSSIL. There aren't many at , but ours speak to the diverse paleontological resources recovered from public lands & found more extensively at other bureaus. Our examples incl. petrified wood, fossilized clams & an Allosaurus skull cast.

“C” is for CERAMIC. Our collection contains ~150 Native American ceramics from the late 1800s to the present, including pieces by masters whose works revived centuries-old traditions and inspired future generations of potters.

This c1925 vessel is by Nampeyo of Hano (Hopi-Tewa, c1859-1942), perhaps the 1st Native American potter nationally recognized by name. She often decorated her pottery with an abstract bird wing design known as the migration pattern. (INTR 01368)

Tewa artist Maria Martinez (1887-1980) crafted polychrome pots but also experimented with ancient techniques. By the early 1920s she'd revived traditional Pueblo black ware & made further innovations. She created this black-on-red vessel in 1934. (INTR 01426)
