#artiseverywhere the theme is #TheNaturalWorld? How wonderful! Welcome to my life! This is what I do,sit in my little studio illustrating endlessly amazing plants and animals. Im excited to hear more about the Frozen planet collaboration too. Nice one @maryannehobbs
#SciArtSeptember Day 29: Yielding. I'm not a great gardener, alas, but I always regard #VegetableGardening as a pact between a person and their soil. Care in exchange for a Yield. These #bookillustrations show an idealised harvest from a yielding #garden, where the pact works well
#SciArtSeptember Day 28: #Dancing. The #Honeybee #Apismellifera does waggle dances to show her hive mates where good food sources are cited, or to prompt swarms. These dances include a lot of information on abundance and precise locations #bee #insectillustration #drawingbees
#SciArtSeptember Day 23:Kind. Meaning "sort" or "type". Or, species. So one of the more exacting jobs I've done is this #chirnomid #midge. Not only did it have to be spc specific, but it was also based on fossilised evidence of the larval head capsule. A specific "kind" of midge
#SciartSeptember Day 19: #winged. So here we have a #WhitewingedDuck #Asarcornisscutata emerging from bamboo. I did this ages ago for @WWTLondon but still have a lot of affection for the #illustration (the composition is something I like) & the duck itself, a very pretty species.
#SciartSeptember Day 17: Heavenly. This had to be tie #TreeofHeaven #Ailanthus altissimus. Not sure why it has this name, but it was a decent subject for a #sketchbook style #botanicalillustration. Done in #watercolour abd #graphite for FOR Sweden
#SciArtSeptember Day 10: Echoing. I know I won't be the only one to think of glorious #bats. These are a #Daubentonsbat and a #Natterersbat close up. Without bat #echolocation there'd be a lot more nocturnal insects out there.
Latest blog is about how to do #botanicalillustrations of #yellowflowers
https://t.co/2a9TaijTr8
They can be tricky subjects, specially when it comes to adding shadows as they can become orange, green, or muddy
This blog looks at 4 different approaches that might be worth try
#SciartSeptember Day 9: #Shell This one gave pause for thought. Crab shell? The crystalline shells of diatoms? Mussels or molluscs? No. I'm settling for more #botanicalillustration. This time it's a #Walnut in its shell, in #penandink & #watercolour. And a walnut tree to go with
