@carler8 I guess that it's because he lacked some emotional push. He almost died during the Bojack movie and he didn't use SS2 until Goku saved him and gave him a speech

This movie isn't centered around Gohan, so instead we got a team attack with everyone to solve the issue

@goodheart_jacob During the Orange Islands arc, the flame on Charizard's tail got hit by a Poliwrath's Water Gun and he was also frozen, so he fell ill.

Ash stayed up all night trying to keep him hot while also trying to revive his flame, so Charizard gained affection and respect for him

As a side note, Diamond & Pearl [Gen 4 anime] is the only series to not feature a single Lizardon/Charizard in any episode, not even a cameo

In the video game, he only uses Super Saiyan 2 during his special attack sprites, his portrait and body sprite have him with regular Super Saiyan

In the OVA, he never uses this transformation, but there's 1 shot of him dashing and his regular SS hair looks like his SS2 design
