#Otd 1317: Edward Bruce’s army reached Castleknock, within sight of Dublin. Mayor of Dublin imprisoned Earl of Ulster, suspected of being sympathetic to Bruce. Dublin citizens burn some of N & W suburbs to prevent their use as a base! Might be why flames on coat of arms!?

#Otd 1689: Prince William of Orange & Mary II were declared joint sovereigns of England, Ireland & Scotland. King James II had fled to France the December before. This deposition led to the Battle of the #Boyne in 1690, & the Battle of #Aughrim in 1691!

Brigit/Brigid/Bríg "exalted one" are 3 Irish goddesses! 9th C Cormac's Glossary written by monks, says Brigid was "the goddess whom poets adored" & that she had 2 #sisters: Brigid the healer & Brigid the smith. Some say they were syncretised with St Brigid! 🎨? #FairyTaleTuesday

#Otd 1905: Arthur Griffith founded Sinn Féin as a political party in #Dublin. They advocated for an Anglo-Irish dual monarchy unified with the British Crown (inspired by the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867). They didn't become popular until after the 1916 Easter Rising.
