A charcoal drawing back from 2001. I was already out of art school for several years but asked for a six month sabbatical from my job at DreamWorks Animation to study drawing full time. It cost me a lot in missed salary but in hindsight I'm so glad I did that.
This is a concept piece for the cove from How to Train Your Dragon.
Another roadside sketch from Death Valley. It's painted in a heavyweight black paper sketchbook so the lights and atmosphere really pop. I'm using tube watercolors with white gouache and painting quite thickly, in fact, the same way I paint with oils.
The Woods outside of Lake Tahoe California. This is done with a Pentel #101 ink brush and a water brush in a watercolor sketchbook. Simple on the go tools so I can get a sketch in wherever I am.
Here's an itty bitty crop-in from yesterday's background scene painting from DreamWorks animated movie Spirit. This was my acrylic approach to painting the texture of the rocks with the cool dusk skylight on top.
If you remember the spot in DreamWorks Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron where Rain (the female horse) washes ashore, this is the painting.
