NYC Draft Riots, July 13-16, 1863: In January 1863, Congress enacted a draft to the American Civil War. On July 13, 1863, mobs of working class Irish rioted, destroying property and lynching African Americans who they blamed for the war.

Tourmaline is a chemically complex group of silicate minerals. Mineral collectors appreciate the size & beauty of tourmaline crystals, making them some of the most hunted of the mineral world. The NYSM Mineral Collection has many important tourmaline specimens.

Crinoids may look like underwater flowers, but they are actually animals. With a holdfast attaching them to the sea floor, a "stem" of columnals protecting them, and branch-like pinnules that snag food from the water, it's easy to see why crinoids are called "sea lillies".

The Museum is honored to announce that today it transferred ownership of Cornplanter’s pipe tomahawk to the Seneca Nation. The announcement took place at the Nation’s Onöhsagwe:de’ Cultural Center, where the pipe tomahawk has been on loan since March 2019. https://t.co/D6V6FZBgZK
