NYC Draft Riots, July 13-16, 1863: In January 1863, Congress enacted a draft to the American Civil War. On July 13, 1863, mobs of working class Irish rioted, destroying property and lynching African Americans who they blamed for the war.

This 1776 print from the NYSM's History Collection is titled, "La destruction de la statue royale a Nouvelle Yorck.” It depicts the moment when, following the reading of the Declaration of Independence, a group of New Yorkers physically pulled down the statue of King George.

#HistoryHumpday: On March 25, 1911, 146 people perished in a fire that broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in NYC. Of those that died, 123 were young women who worked 12-hour days in the factory. The tragedy led to political action and improved labor & safety conditions.

The exhibit, which features 87 illustrations created by 69 artists, will be on display at the Roberson from July 21, 2019 - January 20, 2020.

The mural, Charter Making by David C. Lithgow, was displayed in the NY Building at the 1939 World’s Fair in Queens, NY. The mural was later transferred to the NYSM where it was on display until 1976. NYSM staff are working to get this mural conserved and put back on display.

This mineral specimen collected from Balmat, St. Lawrence County, contains pink spinel, colorless phlogopite, calcite, pyrite, forsterite, and a slender amber-colored “unknown” mineral. Further studies indicated that it is warwickite, a rare species of magnesium borate.
