#ScienceTuesday: Evidence of one of Earth’s oldest known forests dates back approximately 385-million years. The Devonian-age Gilboa fossil forest of Schoharie County, New York, is characterized by extensive impressions of tree root systems and even a few fossil tree stumps.
This ca. 1912 “Everybody's Vacuum Cleaner" was hand-powered and operated by repeatedly drawing the handle (and internal plunger) up and down to create suction. Described as a “carpet sweeper & broom combined”, it was an affordable, albeit laborious, deep-cleaning option for many.
Building on an initiative launched in 1986 and now numbering more than 160 artworks, the collection showcases the breadth of Native artistic skills and craftsmanship.

NYSM scientists are investigating a tortuous meltwater path created over 16,000 years ago in, around & over folded & eroded limestone, shale, & sandstone near Ravena, NY. Left behind was a complex landscape created by overlapping geologic processes over a long period of time.

These early 19th century women's bathing suits were recently donated to the NYSM History Collections from the Stiles & Sherman family. The form-fitting black suit, made popular by Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman, was considered to be the first "modern swimsuit" for women.
