NYC Draft Riots, July 13-16, 1863: In January 1863, Congress enacted a draft to the American Civil War. On July 13, 1863, mobs of working class Irish rioted, destroying property and lynching African Americans who they blamed for the war.

The exhibit, which features 87 illustrations created by 69 artists, will be on display at the Roberson from July 21, 2019 - January 20, 2020.

NYSM scientists are investigating a tortuous meltwater path created over 16,000 years ago in, around & over folded & eroded limestone, shale, & sandstone near Ravena, NY. Left behind was a complex landscape created by overlapping geologic processes over a long period of time.
These early 19th century women's bathing suits were recently donated to the NYSM History Collections from the Stiles & Sherman family. The form-fitting black suit, made popular by Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman, was considered to be the first "modern swimsuit" for women.

Dr. Steven Chamberlain donated a collection of specimens from the Balmat Mining District in St. Lawrence County, NY. The NYSM now has the most complete & significant Balmat mineral collection that can be used for exhibitions, research, & education.
Theodore C. Baim (1910 - 1996) was a self-taught artist & botanist who illustrated plants to aid in his learning. He was able to capture the beauty of the often-overlooked mosses & lichens in beautiful watercolor paintings, fifty of which are housed in the Museum.
