“We gave ourselves up in old times to #mythology, and saw the Gods everywhere. We talked to them face to face, and the stories of that communion are so many they outnumber all the like stories of all the rest of Europe.” - #WBYeats

The Wassail Bowl
Families assemble around a bowl of spiced ale, decorated with ribbons.
They toast each other with 'wass hael' = 'to your health', an ancient Saxon phrase.
Hence the bowl is called the Wassail or Wassel-bowl.
On #ChristmasEve in former days, the small people, or #spriggans, would meet at the bottom of the deepest #Cornish mines, and celebrate #MidnightMass.
Note to the producers of #Poldark: You missed a trick there. :)

@tillymary Hi Emma, the painting is “The Fairy Funeral” by Czech painter Maximilian Pirner. Did you spot the fairy harpist? Isn’t she adorable? Great bum!
Welsh fairies often appear in the form of a funeral with a bier and a black cloth. This is a common sighting for (past all dispute) the fairies infallibly foreknow the time of Men's death.
