Gen Con Online is only ten days away! As part of the event, I'm rolling out some new products, one of which is playmats! I'll be unveiling designs for all of the pieces in The Else Lands; here are a few of them!

I was heavily inspired by Zdzislaw Beksinki's work, particularly his dreamlike (often nightmarish) depictions of strange portals, mystical doorways, and imperious towers. If you're not familiar with his work, it's a feast for the eyes, and I highly recommend checking it out!

Tower of Dreams kicked off the tower-themed paintings I've been working on for the past year. At the time I had no plans to do more such paintings, but I liked how it turned out so much that I did another...and another...and another...and I've got ideas for many more!

Cold Cosmic Towers was inspired by the lyrics from a song by the band Caladan Brood. The band itself is inspired by Steven Erikson's series The Malazan Book of the Fallen, which I haven't read yet, but its somber, magisterial tone, darkly poetic lyrics, and the grand scope...

Most significantly, these two pieces represent the inaugural illustrations in a new series within the Else Lands: Towers of the Else Lands. This series will be a more thematically cohesive extension of the Else Lands proper. Stay tuned for more details!

The tower itself may be the most geometrically and perspectivally complex subject I have ever depicted. I learned a lot from painting it, much of which will hopefully smooth the way for future designs of similar complexity.

The Twilight Gate, 2020

The Twilight Gate was envisioned as a companion piece to The Waning Passage. I imagined the glistening crystal in this piece as an analogue to the crescent moon in the latter piece, illuminated only by the light of the setting sun.

Hopefully, one day soon, the obstacles denying access to that brighter world will fall away.
