The Bowlers also owned an 11-acre country seat in nearby Portsmouth. As depicted by Copley, Mrs. Bowler presents a garland of painterly blooms that recall the variety of domestic and exotic plants grown in the estate’s renowned gardens and greenhouses
Toujours de la pluys cher fils et cela a procuré à notre chère petite [Marie-Catherine Michel de Villebois] la satisfaction d’aler à la messe en calesche dans la boue comme en may.

Ogden wears a wedding ring in her circa 1730 portrait, which was evidently commissioned to mark her marriage to David Ogden (circa 1711-1750), also her first cousin. However, it is the sitter's rich red mantua gown that arguably steals the show close to three centuries later.
Catherine Ogden (1709-1797) was born and raised in New Jersey. Her mother Catharina/Catherine Vanderpoel (1683-1727) hailed from Albany, and Dutch roots may explain the choice of Pieter Vanderlyn (1687-1778) to complete this portrait of Ogden @NewarkMuseumArt. #VastEarlyAmerica
Brilliant piece on @Smarthistory by the equally brilliant Dr. Emily Thames on José Campeche's ex-voto of the Holy Family! #VastEarlyAmerica #AmericanArt #SlaveryArchive

A Revolutionary War veteran, Wynkoop is shown with a silver-tipped walking stick. His wife holds an oval snuffbox decorated with an American eagle.
@Scott_History @londonmikmaq A somewhat simpler variation, also interesting that the skirt is colored red and yellow in several examples of this particular plate.
Great to hear Dr. Liz Ellis of @PrincetonHist kick off @TheITPS 2022 #ITPSKinderCon with an overview of her important new book, The Great Power of Small Nations: Indigenous Diplomacy in the Gulf South.

Obsessed with Dr. Alexander Hamilton's 1755 caricatures of Annapolis Tuesday Club members, beginning with his own (as club secretary "Loquacious Scribble Esqr."). Silly little guys being silly little guys.
