#inktober2021 17) Collide. The Oscar winning movie ‘1917’ was largely filmed on #salisburyplain. One scene sees a German aircraft collide with a French barn. The set was so realistic that swallows nested in it (two broods). The sites were assessed for archaeology beforehand too.
2/3: In my ‘day job’ I’m often reminded of the importance of Black History across UK islands. From the sailor fighting alongside Nelson on HMS Victory – depicted on Nelson’s Column – to the Anti-Slavery token excavated in a burial at Haslar Naval Hospital, Gosport. @mod_dio
All digging done on the @mod_dio op nightingale excavation. Recording left. Wouldn’t you know - last day had some star finds! Made by vet John. Rings, beads & (we think) a sceatta!! Just what we wanted. Will coin have a face when clean? With @wessexarch & @BreakingGroundH
Catching up with my sketches of the burials found on the @mod_dio Operation Nightingale Ex Ring Giver excavation on Salisbury Plain. These act as an aide memoire on site without needing the archives. More anon. With @BreakingGroundH and @wessexarch #Archaeology #veterans

Prompted by @MatthewPope and his archiving of site books, I’ve been photographing my old site sketchbook from Barrow clump 2012. Avoiding the more salacious journal entries! #opnightingale #barrowclump #archaeology #veterans
Caribou carved onto the headstones of the Newfoundland soldiers that lived and died at Morn Hill camp Winchester in the Great War. Seen on my walk over Magdalen Hill today
Just adore the costume and expression on this woman in the choir stalls at St Cross hospital and almshouse. They are Tudor in date and possible Flemish in origin. Could help thinking of @Lucy_Worsley too
Toys and childhood innocence provide welcome respite from constant reminders of humanities inhumanity and idiocy. Here a small toy dog made from army blankets for the daughter of Sgt Watts. IWM North @modernconflict1
