Earlier in the year I was able to get down for the 1st winter Ross's Gull on a couple of occasions. A stunning little gull and 22 years since my first in exactly the same location. A recent sketch from photos taken at the time.

Now is a great time to look for Merlin in upland areas, pairs can be very vocal especially early in the morning. This illustration from a few years ago of a pair and a traditional territory in Co. Wicklow.

Early November many years ago I got to see 4 Pallas's Warblers in a day in Cork, it has remained a favourite species ever since. Although I haven't seen another in Ireland, I have been fortunate to see countless 100's or even 1000's in Asia since.

I was very lucky to have a male Rosy Startling turn up close to where I was working during the summer and really enjoyed an evening twitch. Here are a few ideas for a painting and an adult and juvenile illustration plan worked up recently.

I was delighted to be asked to join The Sketchy Birders Team for the Global Bird Weekend on 8th-10th October by John Cox.
I plan to spend time over the weekend sketching in the field and sharing these with other team members, any sales a % will be sent to Birdlife International.

I really love Phylloscopus leaf warblers and have been very lucky to see many species across Europe and Asia. With increasing variety turning up with some regularity in Europe in recent years, I sketched up some notes to refresh my thoughts ahead of the Autumn.

There have been several Wrynecks around so far this Autumn but I haven't been lucky enough to stumble onto one yet. These sketches were of a bird on Cape Clear last Sept.
