8 June 1966. XB-70 Valkyrie prototype was destroyed in a mid-air collision. Chief Test Pilot Joe Walker (F-104 pilot) and Carl Cross (XB-70 co-pilot) were killed, while Al White (XB-70 pilot) ejected, sustaining serious injuries.

31 May 1850. Birth of Charles-Alphonse Pénaud (d. 22 October 1880). French pioneer of aviation. He was the originator of the use of twisted rubber to power model aircraft. His 1871 model airplane, 'Planophore' was the first aerodynamically stable flying model.
26 May 1941. Bismarck. At 15.00 hours a first air strike force of Swordfish flew off HMS Ark Royal but was unsuccessful. At 18.50 hours a second force of 15 Swordfish attacked and, armed with torpedoes, ensured her final destruction.
25 May 1910. At Huffman Prairie, Orville Wright took off on a six-minute flight with Wilbur as his passenger, the only time the Wright brothers ever flew together. Orville then took his 82-year old father on a seven-minute flight.
16 May 1943. Launch of Operation Chastise, attack on German dams by RAF 617 Squadron, subsequently known as the "Dambusters". Nineteen Lancasters took off from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, England, beginning at 9:28 p.m.
