The Junkers JU-87D-3 Stuka dive bomber was evaluated with a personnel pod mounted above each wing. The pods could be released during a shallow dive and be 'paradropped' to deliver agents behind enemy lines. The scheme, however, never became operational.
1 September 1939. First allied aerial victory of WW2. Polish Władysław Gnyś (24 August 1910 - 28 February 2000), flying a PZL P.11c fighter damaged a Ju-87 "Stuka" and downed two Dornier Do-17E bombers.
1 September 1937. First flight of the Bell YFM-1 Airacuda. First military aircraft produced by the Bell Aircraft Corporation, originally designated the "XFM-1, Bell Model 1". Designed as a mobile anti-aircraft platform as well as a convoy fighter.
26 July 1944. First jet aircraft combat, Alfred Schreiber flying a Messerschmitt Me 262 A-1a intercepted and attacked a Mosquito PR XVI, a photo-reconnaissance aircraft from 540 Squadron RAF.
Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien (Swallow). The only Japanese inline-engine fighter aircraft to see service during WW2.
8 June 1966. XB-70 Valkyrie prototype was destroyed in a mid-air collision. Chief Test Pilot Joe Walker (F-104 pilot) and Carl Cross (XB-70 co-pilot) were killed, while Al White (XB-70 pilot) ejected, sustaining serious injuries.
3 June 1918. Zeppelin-Staaken https://t.co/0vyzGMPl16 type L 1432. 4-engine German biplane strategic bomber, modified as a float-equipped seaplane for the Marine-Fliegerabteilung (Imperial German Naval Air Service) using Maybach engines, crashed during testing.
