Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) was a Czech painter, illustrator and graphic artist, living in Paris during the Art Nouveau period. He was best known for his stylized and decorative theatrical posters. Mucha was a big influence on the "Studio" artists and many other illustrators.

James Allen St. John (1872-1957) was an American author, artist and illustrator. Famous for his illustrations for the novels of Edgar Rice Burroughs. One of the forefathers of Modern Fantasy Art. His most famous disciples were Roy Krenkel and Frank Frazetta.

Al Hirschfeld (1903 – 2003) was an American caricaturist best known for black and white portraits of celebrities and Broadway stars. He had a beautiful, fine line style. Very minimalistic. Known for hiding his daughter Nina's name in his drawings.

Frank Godwin (October 1889 - August 1959) was an American Illustrator and comic strip artist. He was known for his strips Connie and Rusty Riley. Godwin also illustrated books such as Robin Hood, King Arthur and Treasure Island. He also did editorial and advertising art.

Bill Holman was an American cartoonist (1903-1987), most famously known for his zany, screwball comic strip Smokey Stover. Here is a great example of a Sunday strip from 1949. The strip featured silly gags, but were scattered with more zany tidbits throughout (a bit dated!).

Howard Pyle was an American Illustrator (1853 - 1911) who worked in a variety of mediums (painting, Pen and ink) and styles, creating covers and illustrations for many children's books. He taught art at Drexel. Followers and former students are now known as the Brandywine School.
