Three stages of a Frazetta painting. Originally, the cover to a 1970 paperback book (with the man in the foreground), Frazetta eliminated the man, then added one of his famous women. He did this with many of his old paintings, for better or worse!

Dr. Kenneth R. Smith was born in Austin, Texas in 1943. Got a Ph.D. at Yale in 1972. Taught courses in classical civilization, 19th c. European philosophy, ethics, political theory, nihilism, and esthetics. He has done artwork for Creepy, Eerie, Phantasmagoria, and Heavy Metal.

Here's a rare instance of seeing the completed work, the final inked page and the original pencil piece. This is from the second appearance of Captain Marvel in Marvel Super Heroes 1968. Pencils by Gene Colan with inks by Paul Reinman. Classic issue, classic artwork.

More Leyendecker paintings. He did 322 Saturday Evening Post covers. Out of respect, Norman Rockwell did 321 and stopped. Rockwell was the only artist at Leyendecker's funeral in 1951.
