@OaklandKao I liked this one best
incidentally, if Batman TAS hadn't been created during the post-R&S revolution, the cartoonists in charge wouldn't have even been allowed to redesign him from the first effort. "Nope, sorry, that's what's on the model sheet! Can't confuse the kiddies!"
@OaklandKao I didn't like them as a kid & still don't; allegedly they were to animate better & maybe that was true for action scenes but as far as the character acting, everyone's faces just became really bland & expressionless. they just couldn't do drawings like this one anymore
same time as this Lupin III TV cartoon, THIS is what American TV cartoons were rapidly degenerating into.
"N-no what're u doing u can't have appealing design or fluid expressive animation in heckin TV cartoonarinos, t-that's just too EXPENSIVE!"

how many character design clichés can we count in just one poster?
I'll start:
1) scrawny, smiley rat-faced beta male "hero"
and
2) sassy, smirking female lead of indeterminate ethnicity who will be smarter and better than the men at everything
what else?
@fantasumay @tacticalfiend consider this, in parting - I saw this Tuca & Bertie fanart you retweeted.
doesn't this FANART, which was drawn for FREE by an AMATEUR, look MORE ALIVE & EXPRESSIVE than the real, official (& expensive!) show?
wouldn't u like the show MORE if the art was THIS GOOD ALL THE TIME?
Uh-oh, those faces are getting a little too CALARTS there, buddy! BAIL OUT, BAIL OUT!!!!!

Let's start with her design. It's very 50s/60s, which in modern terms we'd call "flat" BUT note how despite being SIMPLE, her shapes and their proportions are just right for maximal APPEAL. this is a very subtle balance that requires SKILL. compare to her modern counterpart 4 ex.
@ActionCoaster this is what Blaze would have looked like if Streets of Rage 4 had an American or (especially) Canadian art department
pretty convenient how LE DINOSAUR GRANDPA OLD WAYS required much higher skill than these forward-thinking beanmouth-noodlearm modern cartoons
CalArts style (or w/e you want to call it) is the Humans-of-Flattening of animation
comic books got cursed with a version of this too: https://t.co/war65aOaty
